The Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) was established in 1961 as the governing body for football in the region. It encompasses 41 national associations, including the United States, and spans from Canada in the north to Suriname in the south. CONCACAF is responsible for organizing various international competitions, such as the CONCACAF Champions League, qualifying tournaments for all FIFA competitions, and the renowned CONCACAF Gold Cup.
In 2016, CONCACAF hosted the Copa America Centenario, an extraordinary event commemorating the 100th anniversary of the oldest international football tournament in the world. For the first time, the tournament was staged outside of South America, featuring six teams from CONCACAF and all ten teams from CONMEBOL. This collaboration between the two American confederations set a new standard for inter-confederation cooperation in the Americas and globally.
CONCACAF gained prominence in hosting major football tournaments with the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada, marking its first full international World Cup since the United States hosted the Women’s World Cup in 2003. The confederation has also organized other notable competitions in recent years, including the 2014 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, the 2011 U-17 World Cup in Mexico, and the Trinidad and Tobago 2010 U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil witnessed impressive performances from CONCACAF representatives. The United States, Costa Rica, and Mexico shocked the world by showcasing their strengths. The United States advanced from the challenging “Group of Death,” while Mexico narrowly missed reaching the quarterfinals after a heartbreaking defeat to the Netherlands. Costa Rica surpassed expectations by reaching the quarterfinals before exiting the competition after a penalty shootout loss to the Netherlands.
The 2012 London Olympic Games proved to be a historic tournament for CONCACAF, as the U.S. Women’s National Team and the Mexico U-23 Men’s National Team both claimed gold medals. It marked the first time in Olympic history that two teams from the same confederation stood atop the podium.
CONCACAF has also had a strong presence in previous FIFA World Cups. The United States, Mexico, and Honduras received automatic spots from the area in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, with both the United States and Mexico advancing to the Round of 16. The confederation was represented at the 2006 World Cup in Germany by the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Trinidad and Tobago. The United States advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan, while Mexico won their group and advanced to the second round.
In 2005, Mexico achieved a significant milestone for CONCACAF by winning the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru, becoming the first men’s team from the confederation to secure an outdoor world championship. CONCACAF has also hosted various FIFA world championships, such as the FIFA Futsal World Cup hosted by Guatemala in 2000 and the FIFA Women’s Under-19 World Cup held in Canada in 2002, won by the United States. In addition, Trinidad and Tobago hosted the U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2010, while Mexico hosted the U-17 Men’s World Cup in 2011, winning the championship.
The Gold Cup, CONCACAF’s premier event, takes place every two years and features national teams from the region. The tournament follows a group stage format, with teams competing in round-robin matches before advancing to the knockout stage. Mexico and the United States have been dominant forces in the Gold Cup, with Mexico winning the tournament on multiple occasions, including victories over the United States in the finals. Canada also achieved a surprising triumph in the 2000 Gold Cup, capturing their first major international title.
CONCACAF’s commitment to football development, hosting major tournaments, and the success of its national teams has solidified its status as a prominent confederation in the world of football. The region continues to showcase its talent and passion for the sport through the Gold Cup and other international competitions.

Panama’s participation in the CONCACAF Gold Cup has lead them to the final on multiple occasions; however, they have lost all of their chances to raise the Cup, in 2005 and 2013, both times being defeated by the tournament’s host, the USMNT.
